Dear Dr Rzewuska,

Invitation to attend a workshop on research priorities for multimorbidity

We are pleased to invite you to a one-day workshop on the future of multimorbidity research in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings to be held on 21 June 2018 at the Academy of Medical Sciences in London, with an optional networking reception from 4.30pm on 20 June 2018.

This event has been jointly organised by the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, the Medical Research Council (MRC, now part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)), the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), and Wellcome. The agenda has been developed together with a steering committee comprising: • Professor Stephen MacMahon FMedSci; Principal Director, George Institute for Global Health and Chair of the Academy’s working group on ‘Multimorbidity: a priority for global health research’ • Professor Paul Elliott FMedSci; Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health Medicine, Imperial College London and Chair of the MRC Population and Systems Medicine Board • Professor Naomi Levitt; Head of the Division of Diabetes and Endocrinology, University of Cape Town and Director of the Chronic Diseases Initiative for Africa

The workshop will bring together approximately 70 research experts and will provide a platform to discuss relevant priorities, opportunities, and barriers facing multimorbidity research. Breakout sessions will focus on several research priorities set out in the Academy’s recent international policy report ‘Multimorbidity: a priority for global health research’ (to be published this April). A copy of this report will be made available ahead of this meeting.

Overall, the aims of the meeting are to identify: • Areas where research can have the most impact in addressing multimorbidity • The methodological approaches needed to enable such research • Current barriers to such research and ways in which they can be overcome

Further information can be found in the attached draft agenda.

We would be delighted if you were able to attend this workshop and the networking reception. To confirm your attendance, please contact Dr Rachel Brown at the Academy of Medical Sciences (rachel.brown@acmedsci.ac.uk, +44(0)20 3141 3223) by 27 April 2018.

Please note that we are able to support restricted standard class travel for those attending from outside the UK, and provide accommodation for up to two nights on the evening of 20 and/or 21 June for those with lengthy journeys.

This workshop on LMIC research priorities for multimorbidity will be held following a similar event on 20 June to explore multimorbidity in a UK-specific setting. Although we have limited capacity, if you are also interested in attending this UK-focused multimorbidity workshop please do let us know and we will do our best to accommodate your request. Please note, all attendees from both workshops are invited to the networking session on 20 June as we hope to foster relationships between researchers interested in multimorbidity across the globe.

Yours sincerely,

Professor Stephen MacMahon FMedSci
