Description

Could a new ceremonial mace for Scotland’s parliament help to give value to our values?

Today is the 20th anniversary of the Scottish parliament, which is sitting when the mace — presented by the Queen at the opening ceremony on July 1, 1999 — is laid in front of the presiding officer. It is inscribed with four words: wisdom, justice, compassion and integrity. These are reproduced on trinkets in the parliament shop and on colouring-in sheets for children. They have also filtered into Scottish public policy. The Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) states that these are its values, in the top left-hand corner of its busy policy diagram.
