Research Profile

Theme 1: ecosystem response record of the end Cretaceous event.

Examining the geological record of the mid and high latitude Creataceous – Paleogene boundary, a key point in biosphere evolution. I formed and currently run a multidisciplinary research group examining the Boltysh  meteorite crater, Ukraine. This crater contains a uniquely high resolution post impact record of biotic and climatic change. This research is funded by NERC.

Theme 2: Ecosystem responses to Large Igneous Province eruptions

Interdisciplinary research into the impacts of large scale volcanism on the atmosphere and biosphere. This research is currently funded by the Danish Government. I manage and co-ordinate a large group of researchers from different disciplines at Aberdeen, Open University, Faroe Islands Geological Survey and at hydrocarbon operators including Statoil, Chevron, ENI and Dong. This research has led to a series of interdisciplinary publications including innovative contributions on atmospheric forcing, plant ecosystem dynamics and eutrophication events. Most recently, I have made a major step forward in identifying links between crustal magma processes and vegetation dynamics.
