Biography

Professor Jennifer (Jen) Cleland is John Simpson Chair of Medical Education Research, Director of the Centre for Healthcare Education Research and Innovation (CHERI), University of Aberdeen, Scotland, and Director of the Scottish Medical Education Research Consortium (SMERC).  She is a member of the Association for Medical Education Europe (AMEE) Executive; an Invited Member of the Wilson Centre, University of Toronto, Canada, and Adjunct Professor at the following universities: Curtin University, Perth, Australia; the Uniformed Services University of the USA; and the University of Southampton, UK.  She is the former Chair of the Association for Medical Education (ASME) (2013-2018).  She was a Clinical Psychologist in Liaison Psychiatry, in the UK health service (NHS), before moving into academia full-time in 2011.

With nearly 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, she has published widely in a broad range of journals including the BMJ, Quality and Safety in Healthcare, and Medical Education.  She is co-editor, with Steven Durning, on “Researching Medical Education” (Wiley, 2015), a core text for Masters in Healthcare Professions Education programmes globally. She has held Editorial roles with several high-esteem journals in her field, and is currently Deputy Editor for Medical Education.

Jen’s particular research interests are: selection, assessment and performance; medical careers decision making; education and systems reform.  She works with both quantitative and qualitative approaches and data collection methods.  Her research spans the continuum of undergraduate and postgraduate training. 

When asked recently what drives her, she replied “Curiosity.  I love finding out more about phenomena, people and places, and want to carry out and support research which has academic, policy and practical benefits”.
