Biography

As a full-time doctoral student at the esteemed University of Aberdeen's School of Language, Literature, Music, and Visual Culture (LLMVC), my academic year commences on February 1, 2023. My research endeavours concentrate on the investigation of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks utilised in the Southeast Asian region, scrutinising the calibre of these instructional materials through an amalgamation of corpus research methodologies and comprehensive teacher assessments.

Prior to embarking on the pursuit of a PhD, I garnered invaluable experience in the domain of English language pedagogy as an EFL instructor at a lower secondary Islamic school situated in the Maluku archipelago, Eastern Indonesia. Throughout my fourteen-year tenure in this capacity, I diligently refined my instructional techniques and deepened my comprehension of the distinct prerequisites associated with EFL classroom environments. Prior to my service as an EFL teacher, I was employed for a period of two years as an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instructor within the ILP Corporate Division, headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. This experience further bolstered my professional acumen in the realm of English language instruction, augmenting my expertise in tailoring linguistic training to the particular needs of corporate clients.

Research Profile

The focus of my doctoral research is a mixed-methods investigation of the quality of EFL textbooks used in secondary institutions across Southeast Asia. Through corpus studies, I intend to analyse the language difficulties and instructional sections of the textbooks, with a concentration on various language skills. In addition, I will use qualitative methods to collect the perspectives of instructors on textbook management via online surveys and virtual focus group discussions. The primary goals of my research are to contribute to the understanding of English language teaching and learning in the context of SEA and to provide educators, stakeholders, and textbook authors with valuable insights to enhance the quality of education. In addition, I aim to provide methods for evaluating reading and listening materials in ELT textbooks. My experiences as an EFL and ESP instructor have equipped me with the skills and knowledge necessary to tackle this essential issue, and I am eager to make a significant contribution to the education landscape in the region.
