Abstract

The church of San Giorgio at Montemerano is the repository of some important fifteenth-century artworks from contemporary Sienese artists, such as Sano di Pietro, Vecchietta and Pellegrino di Mariano. (fig. 2.1) However, the rich fresco decoration has never been examined in depth. This essay discusses the image of St Ursula and the Eleven Thousand Virgins of Cologne, the most important episode in the hagiography of this saint, that decorates the lower tier of the right nave of the church.
