Abstract

This essay develops the notion of disaster (as taken from Maurice Blanchot) with reference to pedagogical practice. The essay proceeds from a consideration of work by the French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard (specifically, an essay entitled "Endurance in the Profession") and compares the thinking advanced there with a position advanced in The Claim of Language: A Case for the Humanities (U. of Minnesota Press, 2004).
