Abstract

Piotr Rawicz, a survivor of the Lvov ghetto and then the Auschwitz and Leitmeritz camps, is the author of a unique book on the annihilation of the Jews of Eastern Europe, The Blood of Heaven. A story that fascinates by the power of its narration, by the violent beauty of its writing, by its contempt for all conventions and norms, including those of testimony. For according to the cruel and poetic modalities that are specific to him, he gives an account of the murder of a people, of the chaotic flight of the survivors, but also of the difficulty of testifying to the disaster if not obliquely and refractedly. This book will allow readers to (re)discover a man and a work long forgotten, through the texts of critics and specialists of literature who consider that The Blood of the sky, in its dazzling, is one of the great texts of the twentieth century, and the testimonies of those who knew Rawicz, a seductive and desperate character. Some of his scattered or unpublished writings are gathered here.
