Abstract

The brochure for the 2005 ASME XV National Conference refers to 'music education at an exciting and challenging time'. In those instances where music teaching and learning are considered stimulating and demanding, it is salutary to ask if the excitement and challenge of the programmes reflect merely the presentation of a variety of delights that engage us; portray what purports to be 'new' content and methodology that enthuses us; or encourage the development of greater musical understanding that enlightens us.
