Abstract

The fourth volume of the collected writings documents Warburg's early attempts to put his concept of image on a systematic basis. The texts presented are a key document of the early phase of Warburg's thinking and research on the history and theory of image and symbol between approx. 1888 and 1905. With these texts, which have remained fragments, Warburg created a dense and emphatically biographical documentation of his own path of thought that is unique Way allows an insight into the working practice of the young scholar. For the first time, this edition undertakes to focus on the provisional, unfinished aphorisms and notes of Warburg, as well as his numerous schematic drawings and diagrams
