Psychologists have long been interested in what has come to be called implicit
learning (Reber, 1967). In various guises the topic has remained close to the
surface of academic consciousness throughout the history of the discipline (e.g.
Thorndike & Rock, 1934; Greenspoon, 1955). However, over the past 30 years
the literature on implicit learning, has burgeoned and the publication of the
Handbook of implicit learning represents a long overdue recognition of the
importance of this, at times controversial, topic.
