Abstract

Review of: The naked preacher: action research and a practice of preaching by Jason C. Boyd, London, SCM Press, 2018, 240 + xxiv pp., £65 (hardback), ISBN 978-0-334-05644-7

This volume in the SCM Research series is not a homiletical work in any traditional sense of the word. Boyd has a particular interest: what happens with the preacher in the interaction between the preacher and the congregation? He explores this question through action research, which for him is a way of doing theology. He abbreviates this wittingly as ART. Boyd takes his readers with him on an extensive, in-depth self-reflection on the preaching event. The investigation ends up in a vulnerable picture of Boyd himself – he is the naked preacher of the title.
