Buckling and crushing of GRP plates including the effect of foam reinforcement

Abstract

Axial crushing of empty and foam-filled box sections provides an important source of impact energy absorption particularly useful in motor vehicles. As part of the study of the crushing of box sections made from fiber-reinforced composites under axial loads, the buckling characteristics of simply supported orthotropic plates with differing aspect ratios have been investigated. Experimental observations (of the buckling load, mode shape and maximum load carrying capacity of the plates) are compared with theoretical predictions and reasonable correlation is found. An account of the failure mechanisms, similar to plastic hinges in metal plates, which occur in the composite plates is also given.
