Abstract

The aim of this article is to recover and provide consistency to the scattered information available about four cinematic testimonios that starred the Peruvian indigenous peasant leader Saturnino Huillca, between 1973 and 1977: Runan Caycu (Nora de Izcue, 1973); Jatun Auk’a (Jorge Sanjinés, 1974); Si esas puertas no se abren (Mario Arrieta y Marita Barea, 1975) and Kuntur Wachana (Federico García, 1977). This four films —of different lengths and a stylistic range between documentary and docufiction— use diverse testimonial forms of representation, that I analyze here, in order to contribute to the inclusion in Latin American Film History of those Andean film productions resulting from the political alignment of middle class organic intellectuals with different subaltern groups. The Peruvian Quechua peasantry, in this case.
