Abstract

An estimated 86% of deaths in Europe are attributed to five major chronic diseases: cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease and mental disorders. A considerable proportion of premature deaths from chronic disease could be prevented through lifestyle factors, including physical activity.

Move More Aberdeen (MMA) is a physical activity referral scheme commissioned by Macmillan Cancer Support and Sport Aberdeen, based in Aberdeen, Scotland. The scheme offers a 12-week programme of physical activity followed by ongoing phone support for 12 months to drive long-term health behaviour change. The scheme expanded in February 2018 from a cancer-specific service to a physical activity referral scheme for people living with chronic disease.
