Abstract

Colorectal surgery, particularly in case of colorectal cancer, has made tremendous advances over the last decades. These improvements have not only been motivated by the aim of cure, but also by the will to reduce the physiological and functional impact of surgical interventions. Practically, this means decreasing or even avoiding abdominal incision either through laparoscopic/ single-incision laparoscopic approach or by using the transanal route. Surgical trauma can be minimized without sacrificing surgical precision thanks to robotic assistance and augmented reality. Finally, enhanced recovery or "fast-track surgery" further diminishes surgical stress. A new surgical era is born.
