Abstract
This paper gives a comparison of L-VSC and LCL VSC AC/DC converter considering a typical HVDC transmission application. The LCL-VSC converter is designed to have low losses and good DC fault protection. The Matlab and PSCAD detailed modeling is used for system design and testing. The models confirm that the LCL-VSC converter has better power control capability when AC voltage stepping ratio is required. The LCL-VSC also does not suffer from high currents under DC faults which is a significant advantage for high power applications. The L-VSC converter has advantages in slightly lower losses and lower converter rating.
