Abstract
An analysis of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) control system using root locus and Nichols' approaches is given. The response characteristic of the control loop, incorporating an integrator and a single-pole low-pass filter, is measured. Analysis shows that such a compensation scheme provides near optimal behaviour of the control loop and deals with mechanical resonance in a particularly satisfactory manner.
