Development of Lightweight Fibre Reinforced Clay Bricks

Abstract

The potential incorporation of sugarcane bagasse and chicken feathers, as a new additive, in the production of clay bricks was studied. Test specimens were prepared by adding 1, 3, and 5% wt. of either sugarcane bagasse or chicken feathers to the clay mix and the samples were made by the molding method. Dry density, linear shrinkage, compressive strength, and microstructure of clay brick samples were measured and analyzed. The tests were carried out according to the relevant British Standards. The results show that the addition of chicken feathers leads to a significant decrease in brick density up to 13.1%, while reduction in density from sugarcane bagasse inclusion is less significant (3.3%). Further, an increase of the unfired clay bricks compressive strength is noticed with increase in the ratio of chicken feathers and sugarcane bagasse content. In conclusion, the trend in this study shows that chicken feathers and sugarcane bagasse could potentially be used to improve clay bricks properties. The developed bricks are an affordable and eco-friendly construction material which would be beneficial in developing countries for low cost sustainable development.
