    Abstract

The aim of the skaldic project is to produce and edition of the skaldic corpus which can be published both electronically and in print. The skaldic corpus present particular problems for an electronic editing project, such as the very large number of prose and manuscript sources for the verse and the amount of interpretative material needed to make the verse understandable to a wide variety of users. An electronic edition has the potential to present a large amount and variety of information in an interactive and searchable form. In order to produce such electronic resources, the material must be prepared in a machine-readable form, that is, it must be encoded in a way so that software can read and manipulate the information in the edition. That requires considerable planning to limit the amount of additional encoding after the edited verses are submitted by contributors. The edition produced in this way could also be used to generate new reference material on the skaldic lexicon and poetic diction, especially kennings.
