Abstract
The life of the Barra people has depended on fishing for many centuries. With the decline of Gaelic as the main language of the community and the dramatic changes in fishing itself, I was determined to retain as many fishing-related vocabulary and proverbs as possible before they were lost.
The essay is based on papers and conversations held during the fourth Rannachadh na Gaidhlig conference, which took place at Edinburgh in July 2014.
