N2 - The year 2006 sees two major changes to FEMS Microbiology Ecology, for his enthusiasm, hard work and foresight during the past five years. I would also like to thank Paul Rainey, who is standing down as Editor, and all of the retiring members of the Editorial Board. The success of the journal is dependent on a strong editorial team and I welcome new Editors Karl Ritz, Patricia Sobecky, Fons Stams and Chris Tebbe, and also the new members of the Editorial Board.
