Abstract

In this chapter, we address future research topics by examining clinically relevant issues; basic research of the endocrine aspects of endometrial tissue will not be dealt with. We focus on studies of diagnostic strategies, quality of life assessment, and therapeutic effectiveness of existing and new treatment options. Finally, we discuss the role of studies on preference assessment. 2 Establishing an accurate diagnosis is an important part of the clinical process. Incorrect diagnoses may put patients at unnecessary risks, as ineffective treatments will be started, patients will suffer longer from their complaints, and unnecessary costs will be generated. Available diagnostic methods for the evaluation of women with menorrhagia include endometrial biopsy, inpatient and outpatient hysteroscopy, transvaginal ultrasonography with or without color flow Doppler, three-dimensional ultrasonography, sonohysterography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These methods are used as individual strategies or in combination to assess the uterine cavity.
