Gas Hydrate problems in pipelines & its inhibition
Although the naturally occurring gas hydrates are regarded as a potential energy resource, hydrates have been observed to form in gas and oil gathering and transmission pipeline systems, downhole separators, flowlines and equipment. Hydrate formation in pipelines can cause fundamental hindrance to hydrocarbon flow. It is a costly and challenging problem for the oil and gas industry. Since its first identification, the oil and gas industry has injected a constant flow of resources in search for the economic and environmental friendly solution for hydrate prevention. This paper discusses the methods for the inhibition/dissociation of hydrates, viz., the use of thermodynamic and kinetic inhibitors, anti-agglomerates, reduction of pressure and increase of temperature and depressurisation method.
