Abstract

Immunodeficiency, both primary and secondary, can occur due to a variety of defects within the immune system. Clinical manifestation is heterogeneous, with infective, immune-mediated, malignant and auto-immune conditions occurring depending on the area of immune system affected. The gastro-intestinal tract is frequently affected. Here we discuss important subtypes of immunodeficiency and gastrointestinal presentations associated with these.

This concise, up-to-date information includes comprehensive sections on the impact of nutrition, gastrointestinal microbiota, lifestyle, commonly used drugs, and surgical procedures on health and disease. Since the first edition, attention to the roles of nutrition and gastrointestinal microorganisms (microbiota, formerly Microbiota) in health and disease has skyrocketed.
