Impact response of fluid-backed metal beams

Abstract

A series of experiments is described in which steel and aluminium beams backed by an enclosed volume of water were subjected to central impact by V-shaped projectiles over a range of impact speeds. Their behaviour is compared with that of similar beams loaded without fluid present. Transient pressure pulses in the fluid were measured. The mechanisms of collapse and the role of the fluid are discussed.
