Abstract
This book shows the development of an early modern national, political and historical identity among the citizens of the main three cities of Royal Prussia, which from 1454-1772/93 were part of the Polish-Liuthuanian Commonwealth. It sheds light on the theory and practice of citizenship below noble society in the Commonwealth and destroys some of the nationalist myths which had surrounded 'German' culture and nationality in East Central Europe. This book is the Polish translation of a book which was published in Cambridge in 2000.
