Interaction between oscillatory boundary layer flow and a permeable bed

Abstract

Boundary layer flow over a permeable rough bed is known to interact with the flow within the porous bed. This
interaction primarily occurs through infiltration of the flow into the bed due to a spatially varying pressure field. This
interaction leads to an altered velocity profile, turbulence and shear stress when compared to the equivalent
impermeable bed case. The interaction of the flow in the two regions is expected to have a significant effect on
sediment transport and wave attenuation by modifying drag force or friction factor at the bed interface. This study
presents PIV measurements of the velocity above and within a highly porous bed constructed from 12mm beads to
understand the interaction that occurs between oscillatory boundary layer flow and the permeable bed.
