abstract = "On August 24, 2016, the half century of civil unrest in Colombia came to an end with the signing of a peace treaty between the government of Juan Manuel Santos and negotiators from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). This was a truly historic event with it being the culmination of a four-year series of talks which had taken place in both Norway and Cuba. Moreover, the final peace agreement was signed in the Cuban capital Havana. The Cuban government's role in this process and the venue for the signing of the peace agreement were indicative of Cuba as an international actor, a role it has played throughout the revolutionary period starting in January 1959. Cuba as a truly global actor was not only very different from the prerevolutionary period but was also remarkable for a Caribbean island. ",
