Abstract

Duncan and Cheryl MacLean, face a challenge to the growth of their business, Candle Shack. Despite growing Candle Shack to be Scotland’s leading candle manufacturer and seller of candle making supplies, their local council was enforcing a lease for premises that they did not want and could not afford. This lease had the potential to make Candle Shack go up in smoke, with the loss of 45 employees. Duncan and Cheryl had to think through their options. Should they just give up now to avoid heavy losses? Maybe they should fight back and make the council see sense? Maybe, instead, Candle Shack should concentrate on selling candle supplies and stop manufacturing candles?
