Abstract
On 23 January 1973, in the middle of the sub-Arctic night, the volcano Helgafell on Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago off the south coast of Iceland, suddenly erupted. The eruption came without any warning. The residents of the island were immediately and hurriedly evacuated to mainland Iceland.
