Abstract
The paper aims to develop a model for analyzing the preface of the testimony on experience in concentration camps. The preface constitutes a channel of mediation between the reader and the text, fulfilling both a promotional role and acting as an inter cultural translation directed to the target-public. Starting from Gerard Genette’s prefatory model, certain theories of discourse analysis and Richard Watts’ recent analysis of postcolonial paratexts, we work out a schedule for interpretation applying to the types of mediation conceived by the different (categories of) preface writers.
