Abstract

The history of nineteenth-century museums and exhibitions in Chile offers us a view of the development of nationalism and the institutions that fostered it. At the same time, the institutions addressed in this chapter represented the dreams and aspirations of groups of individuals who had the social, political and economic power to make their vision reality. As a result, this chapter discussions multiple and competing versions of the Chilean nation and debates about the essence of Chile amongst elites and intellectuals. The eventual success of failure of these institutions depended, to a large extent, on the efforts of individual men who created cultural tastes and interest what Chile was or would become.
