Abstract
Nosocomial pneumonia continues to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality on the intensive care unit. Although advances in the understanding of its pathophysiology have allowed preventative and therapeutic measures to be improved the ideal method for confirming the diagnosis has still to be decided. This article examines the causes of nosocomial pneumonia and reviews the various methods of diagnosis that are currently being evaluated.
