Abstract

This article publishes for the first time as an undoubted original by Canaletto in the Aberdeen University collection, a very high-quality picture of 'A Capriccio with Roman Ruins and a Bishop's Tomb', painted in the early 1740s. It also publishes and attributes for the first time to Canaletto's father, Bernardo Canal, a 'View of the Grand Canal with San Simeone Piccolo and the Scalzi', based on one of his son's works.
