Abstract

A method is developed to solve the Vlasov equation for the nonlinear response of magnetized ions in the presence of a finite wavelength pump wave. The contribution of ion nonlinearity to the coupling coefficients for various channels of parametric decay, quasimode decay and OTSI of lower hybrid and ion cyclotron waves is obtained and a detailed comparison of the growth rates of these channels has been made. In the case of lower hybrid pump, the ion nonlinearity is important only for the decay into ion Bernstein waves (ω>>kzve, kρi >l). For anion cyclotron pump at ωci and ci the contribution of ions predominates for all channels of decay; OTSI and three wave decay into ion acoustic and ion cyclotron waves are found to have large growth rates.
