Abstract
In rural areas, there are limited conventional (fixed route) public
transport options. As a result, flexible transport providers may operate
in these areas but most of these services have been introduced
as stand-alone services often to cater for a specific group of the
population or to fill a specific need. Eligibility criteria relating to
user types and operating areas/times often apply resulting in limited
options for passengers. Can we enable existing providers to
relax tight restrictions on who they carry and when and where they
operate? Can this be achieved while taking into account passenger
preferences on operator choice and operator preferences on passenger
types they wish to carry? This paper describes a prototype
flexible integrated transport system (FITS), which addresses some
of these issues and enable transport providers to relax their eligibility
criteria where possible, thereby reducing unmet demands while
increasing resource utilisation.
