Abstract

John Barbour's The Bruce is the fullest medieval account of Scotland's most celebrated king and the earliest substantial extant work of prose in the Scots language. This collection of essays from scholars of literature and history underlines and expands upon the significance of Barbour's book.

Interlocking essays by Emily Wingfield and Michael Brown bookend the collection. They focus on the two earliest surviving manuscripts of The Bruce from 1487 and 1489.
