Abstract
in this article ingold focuses on the material and bodily aspects of writing and drawing, and uses a broad context of phenomena from far-eastern calligraphy to aboriginal graphics and to western print technology and engraving. He explores the differences between drawing and writing. at the same time he polemicizes with the classical theory of literacy, claiming that the practices of drawing and writing are not entirely different. Both can be seen as a kind of art, though writing cannot be described through categories of technology, linearity and notation.
