Schooling in Citizenship and Political Community

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

In this chapter, we consider the four questions posed in this volume’s introduction in relation to research conducted among school students in two Scottish municipalities. The research was conducted in the run-up to the 2014 Referendum on Scottish Independence, in which sixteen-and seventeen-year-olds were enfranchised for the first time in a national poll.1 We highlight the significance of the Referendum for the school students who participated in our study. At the same time, we explore the broader dynamics of citizenship and political community in the context of schools, which are crucial sites of authority in citizenship and political community in the modern world.
