Abstract

Exploration well 24/9-7 was drilled by Marathon Oil and its co-venturers on Norwegian licence PL 150 during the first quarter of 2004. The well targeted a series of distinct seismic amplitude anomalies, markedly discordant to the general structural trend. These anomalies had been interpreted as a large-scale sandstone injection complex. Seismic modeling indicated that the best explanation for the bright amplitudes observed was that they were generated by oil-filled, highly porous intrusive sandstone dykes and sills. The data collected from well 24/9-7 (and three subsequent sidetracks) proved this model to be essentially correct. The drilling of the Hamsun prospect resulted in a significant oil discovery with an associated gas cap.
