Abstract

Primary agriculture underpins the whole food chain and is the start point for food security, and for nutrition and health. It is a key driver for the global economy and impacts directly on livelihoods and the environment. According to the World Food Bank ‘agricultural development is one of the most powerful tools to end extreme poverty, boost shared prosperity and feed a projected 9.7 billion people by 2050 [1]. For it to be effective, agricultural practice needs to be both sustainable and visionary, as it will be the major contributor to solving our current and future societal and environmental challenges.
