Abstract
Hormones are the subject of many different kinds of stories both in popular culture and biology and medicine, and they play many different roles that can be both empowering and oppressive. This chapter explores the kinds of stories that we tell about hormones, and about ourselves and each other through hormones. Focusing on oxytocin, testosterone, oestrogen, and cortisol as the central characters, the chapter considers the ways in which different kinds of hormonal stories fit together, come apart, and influence each other, raising questions about the inherently social and cultural as well as biological nature of hormones.
