Abstract

The chapter is the first study of the function of meals in Philo and Josephus. Both interpret meals completely in agreement Hellenistic symposia, not only in their practice and the expectations associated with them, but also in their social function and their philosophical importance. The point of reference here is not only actual meal practice but the Greco-Roman literature reflecting on symposia.
