Abstract
The paper is dedicated to analysis of human-reindeer relations in the early history of religious conversion
of Nenetses. The archive of Soviet ethnographer Grigorii D. Verbov at the MAE (Kunstkamera) has a folder
with contracts (1850-1900) between government officials and Nenetses to pasture of ―Church Reindeers‖. These
reindeers were classified in the document. One of the categories is the ―trained stag‖ (‗uchenii byk‘). This rare

sort of reindeer classification implies a relatin to the Orthodox missionary order of knowledge. The logic of this
order is the main focus of the paper.
