Abstract
In this book I am studying slavery in prehistoric (i.e. pre-c. 1100) Scandinavia, analysing all possible sources available: documents, runes, terminology, names, archaeology etc., something which has never been done before. The scope is very difficult due to the scarcity of sources, but the collected result indicates that slavery was a difficult-to-grasp phenomenon. A picture evolves with different dependencies between people in society, which can be illustrated by a model with free–unfree on one axis and high–low social status on the other. The book has taken more that a decade to write due to the complex material.
