Abstract

In April 1907, Aby Warburg wrote a remarkable entry in his diary (Fig. 1), in which the private scholar, now forty years of age, reflects on his intellectual development and professional achievements so far. The lines have a weary overtone; Warburg resignedly concedes the futility and marginality of his work so far.
