Abstract
In this paper I want to draw attention to the significance of ethics for the practice of research. The paper will lay out a perspective on research and research ethics that will enable nurses to begin to see the relevance of ethics for their own research and to incorporate ethical reflection as an ongoing and vital aspect of their work. We will begin with the deceptively obvious question: what is research? In addressing this question we will lay the necessary foundations for an understanding of the importance of research ethics.
