This talk examines methods to investigate maternal and child health in resource poor settings. Three applied examples (a confidential enquiry, a verbal autopsy survey, and a community-based review drawn from work in Indonesia, Burkina Faso and South Africa) are presented to illustrate the value of using the research process to shift power towards those most directly affected
