    1. Dr. Tan’s work, published in Physical Review Letters etc., that combines the theoretical and experimental approaches to study the surface-roughness evolution caused by the stress in nanoscale chemical etching, found many applications, of cross-disciplinary in technologies including (papers in the following brackets cited his work):

    2. Dr. Tan was one of the pioneers in combined atomistic and continuum simulation of the behaviour of materials. Because of this achievement he was awarded National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation by the State Council of China in 1999, and the First Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award (with Professors Wei Yang and Keh-Chih Hwang etc. of Tsinghua University) by the State Education Commission of China.

     

    3. Dr. Tan’s work on highly packed particulate composites, published on the Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids etc., was cited in journal articles by scientists in the USA, UK, China, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, Greece, Czech, Sweden, Italy and South Africa.

     

    Dr. Tan is a naturalized American under the first preference as a "scientist with extraordinary ability". He received his academic training from Brown University, USA, and Tsinghua University, China.

    Teaching Responsibilities:

    Dr. Tan supervised doctors and masters on subjects including condition monitoring, safety and reliability in subsea engineering and environment protection. He taught courses, such as Subsea Integrity, Fluid Dynamics, Simulation in Materials, Materials and Structures, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Deformation and Fracture of Engineering Materials, Explosion Engineering, Aircraft Structural Analysis, Mechanical Design, Computation, Engineering Materials Laboratory, Plasticity, Impact of Cellular Materials, etc., at institutions world widely including: the School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, Scotland;  International Centre for Mechanical Sciences, Udine, Italy; School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, University of Manchester, England; Department of Mechanical Engineering, Louisiana State University, USA; and School of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Zhejiang University, China.
